- 17 April 1524: Giovanni de Verrazano anchors in the Narrows. He and his crew are the first Europeans to see what will one day become New York City.
- 1525: Esteban Gomez sails into the harbor, and takes fifty-seven of the native population as slaves.
- 1567: Future Dutch navigator Adriaen Block is born.
- 1580: Peter Minuit, New Netherland's third director-general, is born in Germany.
